Saving Lives One Pint at a Time

blooddrive

The FHS blood drive took place on November 8th.  FHS has been hosting blood drives since 1991. This year the goal was to have 88 appointments and 66 pints of blood.

“We made 92 appointments so we met that goal, but we only got 58 usable pints,” HOSA co-chairs Emily Gerebics and Meghann Mckenzie said.

Eisenhower will be holding another blood drive on Thursday, December 19th from 2:00 PM to 7:45 PM in the school gym. Their goal is to reach 31 to 50 pints of blood.

The American Red Cross is the reason schools are able to do blood drives each year. Without them FHS wouldn’t have this opportunity to save lives. It is an organization that is a giant leader in helping others.

“They do so many things. Like the typhoon that was just in the Philippians. The American Red Cross and the International Red Cross are there right now helping those victims and helping families of those victims find each other,” HOSA leader Marti VanEenenaam said.

HOSA was extremely thankful for everyone who participated. VanEenenaam said the impact the students made is bigger than they’ll ever know.

A second blood drive is coming up in March where everyone will get another chance to participate. Participants must be 16 with a Red Cross donor card or at least 17 years of age in order to donate. One person giving blood has the potential to save three lives and despite what everyone says, I was told giving blood doesn’t hurt.

“The feeling that you get is incredible because you know that you gave of yourself. This has the potential to save someone’s life,” VanEenenaam said.
