Be Nice, a new club, What have they been up to?

The Fraser High School be nice. club all began with MyLead. MyLead was a conference attended by sophomores in leadership clubs such as student council and robotics. The conference had such a significant impact on the students that Adriana Barney, Alex Nichol, Kaleigh Nordstrom, and Noah Tonn decided they wanted to start a club centered around building yourself and helping to build others.

The planning process began with a lot of meetings trying to come up with club goals and aspects. But then a counselor had approached Adriana with the idea to use some resources the school already had, and that was a chapter of be nice. ran by Mrs. Impellizeri.

Through the summer and into their junior year they began planning the launch of the club. They knew they had to have some sort of impact to kickstart the club’s reputation, this is where they reached back to MyLead and decided to host a Stand Up for Another activity. Students were tasked to fill out surveys without writing their name, which were then passed back randomly during the activity. Students were challenged to stand up for one of their peers, allowing them to look around the room and see how many people are facing the same issues.

This event allowed students to better understand what the club was about. We then began to have bi-weekly meetings to better mold our goals as a club. Come the new year we began to plan our Winter Wellness for February. We showcased an array of resources available around the community. We also offered a variety of different ways to practice wellness. The event was a success which drove them to plan more activities to advocate for mental health.

They began planning activities for mental health week in May. The week included spirit days and a more anticipated event. The be nice. club was able to get cars donated where students can write whatever they are struggling with and watch the vehicle be smashed during their lunch block.

This was a great first year for the club. Which allowed the club to have confidence going into the second year.

Their second year as a club they received a grant from Planet Fitness and the Red Wings for $10,000. They were also given an experience at Little Caesars Arena to celebrate the prize.

They also had the opportunity to host their second Winter Wellness event with support from the community.

Be nice has also partnered with Fraser High School’s Student Council to plan an event for charity week. This event is supporting Luciana’s Legacy and is a Princess and Prince party hosted by the FHS be nice. club.

Overall, the Fraser High School be nice. club has been a great addition to the high school and passionate about spreading the message to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health!
