Obsession is a film from director and YouTuber, Curry Barker. Curry Barker has been making comedy sketches on his YouTube channel, That’s a Bad Idea for a while now and has posted some of his short films on their too. Many of them getting acclaim like his 2024 short (that’s an HOUR long) Milk & Serial. Now, Curry has made a full feature that has so many people excited to the point where he gets to make the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. With all the hype behind this film, will you be obsessed with Obsession?
This movie focuses on the main character Bear, who has a crush on his friend and coworker Nikki. He’s so scared to share his feelings for her that he uses something he thinks is a gag gift called a “One Wish Willow” to make the wish that Nikki would love him more than anybody in the world. This is a simple concept and idea but what I like about this film in particular, is that they go the the extreme and most disturbing with it. And there’s so much to like about this movie.
Starting with the positives, Inde Navarette absolutely kills her performance as Nikki, with a very loud and wild and unpredictable performance. It reminds me of Mia Goth in Pearl or Toni Collette in Hereditary. While I love her loud performance, I also love the very quiet performance from Michael Johnston as Bear. I think if these performances weren’t as good as they were, this movie wouldn’t be as acclaimed as it is right now. I also think the writing is really smart to where the characters feel real and would do what people would do in a situation like this. Curry also works small bits of comedy throughout this really dark movie. The score also shines as it feels comfortable but slightly off and it really works in this movies favor.
The only thing I can really say I am mixed on is the ending. The reason being is because you know how it’s going to end but there’s enough details to keep you guessing throughout, but I am mixed on it because you can predict it. However it’ll probably grow on me. Overall, I would give this movie a 4/5 but the more I think about this movie the more I like it so my score will probably go up with a rewatch.
