Gorillaz recently came out with a new album called “The Mountain” released Feburary 27th 2026 from their label kong with distribution by Sony Music and is their first album without participation of Parlophone.
Gorillaz is a very popular band founded in 1998 by Damon Albarn (who previously founded the band Blur) and Artist Jamie Hewett who comes up with the art for the band. Their Genre consists of New wave, Rap Rock, Funk, etc. their known for not sticking with one genre and for blending dramas with hits like “Feel Good Inc” and “Clint Eastwood”. This new album is considered going back to their roots and old style of music.
The sound a vibe of this album is mature, melancholic sound and is dealing with the themes of grief, death, and afterlife featuring unique background vocals the mixing is very smooth and very beautiful with instruments such as sitars, bansuri, and sarods indian instruments that make the tone of the album feel very calming and peaceful to listen to.
The lyrics and themes are inspired by both Hewetts and Albarns deal with grief from both of their fathers dying while making this album which helped inspired the albums dark but yet light approach of a sad yet common topic in life.
The music is very peaceful and relaxing and throughout listening to it I thought it was amazing and think it’s worth the listeners time if they like calming music to listen to while relaxing, studying, or just because. The stand out songs in my opinion are “The moon cave” and “Orange county” from the peaceful instrumental in the moon cave to a beautiful and amazing opening and meaningful lyrics and telling a beautiful story to a funky nice type beat in “Orange county” with beautiful and peaceful lyrics.
My overall impression is I thought it was beautiful and an amazing album and long time fans would enjoy the album and even some people discovering the band for the first time.
