Last week, the Mock Trial team competed against Warren Woods Trial for a scrimmage.
The event was a great learning experience for the team. The regional competition is on March 7th. The scrimmage was in prep for the competition so both teams could get a feel for how the event will work on the day of.
In Mock Trial, the attorney’s create questions to ask their witness based off a case given to every team throughout the state. The teams prepare from November until March. The scrimmage gave the team an opportunity to see how their questions will hold up in court and against other people. During the competition, teams are randomly selected opponents, and they do not know how the other team will react to their questioning and statements.
“The scrimmage helps us get a feel for the court proceedings and allows us to smooth out the bumps before the actual competition. It was very beneficial to us last year and I think it will help us do better this year,” senior, Olivia Deir, said.
This is the second year the team has done the scrimmage. Hopefully it turns into a long tradition for the two teams in preparation for the competition.
“The students worked their way through the cases realizing they needed to practice more. We hope to accomplish that this week,” Mock Trial Advisor, Mr. Socha, said.
All in all, the scrimmage was a huge success, allowing for both teams to get a better understanding of the mock trial process.
