Fraser High School recently introduced a Unified Basketball team, allowing special needs students to participate in a team sport. Organized by Peer-2-Peer, there is a mix of gen-ed and special needs students on our team. They play full games against other unified teams in the area.
This past Tuesday, February 10th, they played an amazing home game against Lakeview. After a hard fight, they took defeat with a final score of 50-52.
Peer-2-Peer has also been awarding the students with a “Player of the Game.” Lucas Beecher, #41, helped lead his team with 22 points. He made an incredible three-pointer that had the entire crowd on their feet right at the end of the game.
Along with the students on the court, there are many adults behind the scenes who put work in to make these games happen. Mr. Hogan, a custodian at Fraser High School, is the announcer for Unified Basketball. Following Tuesday’s game, he sent a message to express his gratitude for the support the students of FHS have shown towards the Unified Basketball team.
Here’s a small bit of what Mr. Hogan had to say.
“This was brand new to our school and none of us knew what to expect, but our student body was amazing! The way you cheered for both teams, the love and support you showed our kids was perfect! This school never ceases to amaze me, but this was truly over the top! The energy and enthusiasm you guys showed both days but especially yesterday was unbelievable, making that one of the favorite moments of my career!,” Hogan said.
Overall, it is clear that Unified Basketball has had an amazing impact on the Fraser community. Every single person involved feels inspired and spirited, and this program will continue to change lives in years to come.
