Artificial Intelligence is a tool that is still currently advancing and as of today has a huge debate on whether it’s good for us as a society or not—Specifically in schools, of course. Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is an app/website that kids in almost every single school use for all sorts of different reasons, most teachers however, think it’s one of the main ways kids cheat on their work, and some think it’s good for learning and is a great tool to make things easier. Regardless, AI and people’s opinions on it differentiate.
So with that, it raises certain questions for teachers at Fraser high school and how much they think it can help with teaching, or if it is a sad tool for people to use and it disregards the learning aspects of school.
Culinary teacher James Kokenyesdi is a teacher of Fraser high who comes to be a supporter of AI and has expressed a lot of his support for it in his baking classes saying it is a great tool and often encourages the use of it in class.
When asked for his clear opinion on the debate of if AI is good or not, he obliged the question.“In culinary I’m one hundred percent for it because a recipe has to be accurate,” Kokenyesdi said. “I think it’s a good tool that will allow you to get to your end goal more efficiently, better, and cleaner.”
One of the other teachers from Fraser was also passionate about the debate of AI in class and if it is really the great, useful tool others try and point it out to be. CTE teacher Dennis Jacobs gave his thoughts on the matter.
“AI is good for learning and I encourage it in my classroom.” Jacobs said. “Although, AI can become a crutch for learning and in that case I think it’s not good because you’re not exactly learning.”
Now with Fraser’s teachers perspective, it is also worth noting the students’ views on AI and whether or not their thoughts reflect their teachers.
Fraser student, Madison Turner, has this to say on the debate.
“AI is making it so kids lack their critical thinking and problem solving skills,” Turner stated. “While kids could be learning how to research and finding reliable sources for their work, instead they are having AI find and do their work for them.”
One other student named Anthony Fileccia also had mixed feelings.
“I feel like AI could be reliable for some things, but overall its use is misused and exploited by fellow students who use it to complete every assignment.” Fileccia said.
