Avatar Fire and Ash is the newest movie in the Avatar franchise made by the legendary director James Cameron. Right off the bat this is a franchise i do not care for, as i find the first movie to be ok and the second one to be good but not great. I would much prefer James Cameron to go back to making original movies instead of continuing this franchise. However with this being the third movie in this franchise, does it get me excited for what’s to come next?
This movie follows the events of the last movie. This movie explores the theme of a loss of a family member and does it well, especially in the first 10-15 minutes in this almost 200 minute long movie. but for the most part you’re still getting the same Avatar experience as the last two movies and the only change is the idea of the loss of a family member and the introduction of the ash people.
Starting with the positives, this movie looks phenomenal. I think this movie looks like a high end video game, which is good. The action in here is also really great. I also really like how they explore the idea of being an outcast and the idea of a loss of a family member. With the mixed however, I’m very 50/50 on these characters. I never really liked Jake Sully and I don’t really like the character of Spider. There are other characters I don’t like but those are the main two that I don’t like.
Now with the negatives, this movie feels like the last two. You can predict the movie beginning from end and you would be right for most of the movie. There is also a really stupid decision in this movie that feels like it comes out of nowhere. It also sucks that James Cameron, who has made some of the best sequels ever by understanding the first movie and changing it up to make it feel fresh, this movie feels the same to the others. Not only that but this movie is very repetitive, someone gets kidnapped then you go save them.
overall, this franchise for me, is just ok. This movie is beautiful but feels the same as the other two. If you like these movies, you will like this one, but if you are just ok with these movies you will just be ok with this one. I will give this movie a 3/5 with the idea of this franchise being better as a book series or a really big video game.
