Wicked: For Good is the sequel to the 2024 hit Wicked directed by Jon M. Chu. Wicked is the movie that I like to call, “the movie that messed me up”. The reason why I call it that is because I tend to enjoy movies that are gritty and make you think, Wicked is the exact opposite. The movie is colorful and fun and worst of all, a musical. I tend to hate musicals (there are exceptions) and I had no intent on watching Wicked as it seemed to be everything I don’t like. However, my English teacher last year is a huge fan of musicals and loved the movie, so I ended up watching it (thank you Mrs. Short). I have to say that I loved the first Wicked.
It was a movie that really surprised me with the story and how the themes were explored. The music was memorable, and the chemistry between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande was beautiful. The worst part about the original was that I wanted more, maybe an extra 20 minutes. Wicked: For Good became a movie I was really excited for and had high expectations for. Did it live up to the excitement?
Short answer, yes! To start, this is visually the best movie of 2025. Glinda’s wedding alone looks like a painting. The music in here is also fantastic, the score throughout the movie is great and the songs are as well, my standouts are “Wonderful”, “No Good Deed” and the standout for many, “For Good”. The story is on a grander scale bringing in The Wizard of Oz into the mix which I thought was done decently well. I also think the acting is really strong in this movie from Ariana Grande, who is more of a focus in this movie, and Cynthia Erivo who are the main leads. The other thing I really enjoy is how the themes of the first are still in here and are handled well.
The only bad thing I can really say about this movie other than the ending feeling rushed, is the chemistry between Elephaba and Glinda not working as well. the chemistry is still good enough for there to be huge emotions in this movie, but these characters go so quickly from having a relationship that feels like it’s from Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, to being best friends. I blame that more on the movie’s pacing feeling rushed and trying to get through as much as they can than anything else though.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. I don’t think it’s better than Wicked, but I think at best it’s on par, and at worse still a really good movie. I’ll give this movie a 4.5/5 as I think this movie is amazing. Definitely one of my favorites of 2025.
