M3gan 2.0 is the sequel to the 2023 hit, M3gan. Directed by Gerard Johnstone, M3gan 2.0 gives M3gan the Terminator treatment where the first movie was more horror, and the sequel is an action movie. In this movie a robot called AMELIA is a government weapon gone rouge and M3gan is the only option to stop her. The question I had with this movie is, will this movie be a T2 hit where it tops the original, or will this be a swing and a huge miss?
Starting with the positives, this movie starts off strong with the introduction of AMELIA. It’s the part of the movie where I was most invested but that disappeared quickly after. I liked the action and fights in this movie with a majority being fun to watch. Other than that, I can’t really praise much.
The only mixed I have here is the acting, I wouldn’t say that this movie has the strongest actors but, compared to the first movie the acting feels like a genuine dip in quality, especially Allison Williams who I thought had a very mediocre performance in this, compared to the first movie. The question though is should I blame the actors or the material they were given?
With the negatives, does this movie even know what it’s trying to say? Because when watching this movie starts with AI is bad, then I goes to AI is good and then decides that it can’t make up its mind. Continuing, the writing is not great as it feels like it wants to get the TikTok hype of the original. We have more dancing M3gan and we also get a singing M3gan, we also have many jokes that fall flat as the humor in this movie is something that a child would probably come up with to have other kids laugh at the playground. I also didn’t like the reveal of what was going on with AMELIA.
Overall, this is a movie that a feel like kids would enjoy over teens or adults. In my honest opinion, I’m giving this movie a 1.5/5 as this movie was a huge downgrade from the original. Theres a way to turn M3gan to an action franchise and I don’t feel like this was it.
