The Running Man is the latest movie in the filmography of Edgar Wright and is an adaptation of the novel written by Stephen King. This movie is about a man who needs money to pay for his daughter to see a doctor and will stop at nothing for the wellbeing of his family. It’s an interesting plot for an action movie and the question is, does this add another classic to Edgar Wrights filmography?
Running into the positives, the action looks great. There is probably two or three shots that thy could’ve spent more time on with the CGI, but otherwise it looks great. The action kept me entertained throughout the movie. The pacing made this 133-minute movie feel more like 60 keeping me engaged and not checking my watch. I also enjoyed some of the quirky parts of this movie, like an old lady chanting for Ben Richards (Glen Powell) to die or when a character has a YouTube type essay on how the show works. They work and bring some odd humor to this movie.
Now into the mixed, the acting in here (while not bad) feels generic and like something you can get from every other action movie. I feel like I’ve seen a performance like this from Glen Powell in other movies that he is in. The dialogue is also pretty 50/50 if it sounds human or like bland normal movie talk.
Finally with the negatives and this genuinely bumped my rating down half a point. This movie is VERY preachy with what it’s trying to say. This movie talks about propaganda, rich people and more. It’s constantly repeated throughout the movie, and I am someone who like movies with a message, I just don’t want them to be this preachy about it. You can make a message of a movie clear without bringing it up every couple minutes. This is why the dialogue is in the mixed area, as a good chunk of the dialogue is the preachiness of this movie. If you don’t like movies being preachy, this movie is probably not for you.
Overall, The Running Man is a very fun but preachy action movie. I’ll give it a 3.5/5 and will say that this is not another classic in Edgar Wright’s filmography. However, it’s a good movie for eating popcorn and watching explosions.
