Frankenstein is the latest film in the legendary career of Guillermo Del Toro and is the newest addition to the Frankenstein movie adaptations. I will say that there are many things that interested me into watching this movie, one of which is being a big fan of the novel. Another is that this movie is Guillermo Del Toro’s passion project, he’s been trying for 20 years to get this movie made. With Del Toro being considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, I really wanted to see what his passion project would be. Did it work out?
Anyway, Frankenstein is a movie told in two parts, the first being Victor Frankenstein’s story (Oscar Issac) and the second being The Creature’s story (Jacob Elordi). The first half shows an ambitious Victor trying to bring someone back from the dead, because of the death of his mother. The second half shows how the world treats the creature as cruelly as possible. Almost like the novel.
Staring with the positives, while this movie has a decent amount of changes from the novel, I think they work out really well. I liked the change of Elizabeth (Mia Goth) being the love interest of William Frankenstein (Felix Kammerer) instead of Victor and I also like her relationship with the creature. I also like how The Creature is portrayed as more of an innocent victim instead of a monster. Which leads me into the amazing performances of the cast, specifically Jacob Elordi who kills it in this role, of which I was a doubter if he could do it, I also think that Oscar Issac was a perfect casting choice due to how well he pulled of the role of Victor.
Staying with the positives, I think the writing of this movie is very poetic from the beginning to the changed end, of which I think is phenomenal. This movie also looks visually stunning. The dark colors of grey and green and occasional orange works very well with this film as well as the look of the creature and effects. This film also is paced very well to where it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome but also feels like I need more (even though I would gladly take an extended cut).
Overall, Frankenstein is a poetic adaptation of the novel from Guillermo Del Toro. I would gladly give this movie a 5/5 as I enjoyed every second of this movie. It was worth every penny of my ticket and then some. I would recommend watching it especially because it’s on Netflix.
