Warren Woods Tower Relay

Warren+Woods+Tower+Relay

At Warren Wood Tower High school on September 13, 2013, 8 teams showed up to compete for first place and bragging rights for the rest of the year. WWT Relay has been going on for 18 years. The last six years our Girls Varsity Swim Team has won four times, as their coach, Dave Nowinski, can recall.

“We have a very young team, so the relay will help build their confidence as we enter into our White Division schedule,” Nowinski said, “The team had been training for four weeks and have all been working very hard.”

The freshmen total in the 2013 Fraser Varsity Girls Swim Team is more than a dozen. With so many new swimmers, most of the relays were consisting mostly of them; majority had never been in a relay.

“I’m always trying to beat my time. After we finished our relay event, I felt we did really good. We got first in the heat, and we came in 4th in the entire event, which I was very proud of,” freshmen Morgan Mach said.

The meet was even a bit of a change for some experienced swimmers on the team.

“I did a completely different event (backstroke) than I am used to, but ironically that relay placed second, which was the best place I got all night,” junior Lindsay Fricano said.
After the heated, exhilarating relays, some goggles lost and a false start, it was time to declare the winning team of the WWT Relays. The two schools not called by the time second place rolled around were Fraser and Eisenhower. Both teams waited with baited breath; the crowd holding it with them.
When the announcer named Eisenhower second place, Fraser erupted into cheers of joy.
“I was completely shocked, but so happy when they announced Ike got second. I believe we cheered louder than they did when second place was announced,” Fricano said.
At the broadcast of first place, Coach Nowinski took off his shoes and electronics before getting pushed in the water, as is tradition for winning the relay. The assistant Coach Bob, however, had sneaked off at the announcement of Eisenhower’s place and had driven off before the girls had noticed.

“I was excited for the girls, because it was not expected, but certainly deserved,” Nowinski said. “The girls all swam very well and we had no major mistakes.”

Being WWT Relay champs once more, the girls went home with medals for their events and another year of bragging rights.
