Pierce the Veil, a popular post-hardcore band, released their much anticipated third album in July of 2012. The album, Collide with the Sky , includes Kellin Quinn, Lindsey Stamey, and Jason Butler as guest singers. The album also includes two singles, “King for a Day” and “Bulls in the Bronx.” The very first song on the album, although it is definitely not my favorite song, was a perfect way to grab the listener’s attention and start the album off with a bang. The song, “May These Noises Startle You in Your Sleep Tonight” begins with quiet, haunting music and static in the background followed by yells and screams that linger on through the entire song. At the beginning of the song, you get the feeling that a radio is just being turned on. The song only lasts for a minute and 21 seconds, but the breakdown in the middle of the song definitely leaves an impression. The single “Bulls in the Bronx” is in my opinion by far one of the most meaningful songs on the entire album. The song was written about a fan who had committed suicide after making a heartbreaking video. Vic Fuentes, the lead singer, saw the video and felt led to write a song for the girl. The lyrics, “I would rather end it all tonight, and if I mean anything to you, I’m sorry but I’ve made up my mind,” were actually taken from the sixteen year old girl’s video. The song has a good mix of screaming and clean vocals in it. The chorus, which Vic sings in his high pitched voice that all Pierce the Veil fans love, says, “Maybe we’re just having too much fun. Maybe you can’t handle yourself, staring at me with your lips and tongue. I’ve been having this dream that we could fly.” Although much of the song is slightly heavy and upbeat, the song ends on a peaceful note as the music fades into nothingness. I would say the last song, “Hold on to May,” is the best song on the entire album. The song starts off slow, and after the short intro, Vic comes in singing, “She sits up high, surrounded by the sun. One million branches and she loves everyone. ‘Mom and dad, did you search for me? I’ve been up here so long, I’m going crazy.’” The song was written about an old friend of Vic’s who had a bad relationship with her parents. Lindsey Stamey’s gorgeous voice fits perfectly with Vic’s voice and adds a great touch to the song. The song ends with a trail of static that sounds like the radio that was turned on in the first song is now being turned off. This last song leaves listeners wanting to put the album on repeat and listen to one more time.
