“And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” This quote by President John F. Kennedy begins J. Cole’s newest hit single “Miss America.” In this song, J. Cole brings a true reality to Americans. With the hard melody in the background of JFK speaking, listeners can envision being thrown into a black and white scene where JFK is speaking. Soft percussion comes in slowly towards the end of his speech bringing everything to life and color again. A harder beat introduces the voice of Cole as he raps the truth, “Don’t trip *****, they just words. Though my words tend to sound like Proverbs. ****** don’t see the preachers ’til we dead in the hearse. Granny broke cause she always givin’ bread to the church.” Some people may think that this is too raw for their ears; however, the truth has to be shared among Americans and that’s where the problem starts. Most people are afraid of the truth and rather have it sugar coated. Not all Americans live a wonderful life and that’s where Cole comes in. He expresses how many people in America feel about life and the country that others may not see and realize. “Uncle Sam I won’t sell your crack, I won’t fight your war, I won’t wear your hat.” J. Cole expresses how he and others feel about the government. It seems to be a trap that Cole refuses to fall into. The melody stays the same throughout the song and from time to time a soft tune on a piano plays. The steady rhythm keeps the listener interested in Cole’s lyrical piece. “Miss America, petty thoughts. Miss America, petty thoughts. Miss America, petty thoughts.”
