HIM is the latest movie directed by Justin Tipping (not Jordan Peele), which is a football horror movie that has hype around it due to it being produced by Monkeypaw productions (Jordan Peele’s production company). While I can’t say the idea intrigued me, of a football horror movie, I was interested due to the fact that this movie is heavily marketed around Jordan Peele producing.
Anyway, this movie is about Camron Cade, who is an upcoming quarterback, who wants to be a goat. He gets a head injury and trains with his idol after to make sure he can still play. Once he starts training it takes a dark turn. Which really didn’t make me think this was going to be a movie for me in the first place, but I love to be proved wrong.
Starting with the positives, the movie is shot decently well and has some cool effects. The x-ray effect in this movie is unique and adds some identity to the movie. The other positive is the soundtrack, which I’m almost mixed on due to it being played almost every other scene.
Now with the negatives, this movie has no idea what it wants to be. It tries to be a movie of what it takes to be the best (like Whiplash or Black Swan) and then it tries to be a movie with a message (like Infinity Pool), and it doesn’t do either well. Another issue is the runtime, reason being that this could’ve been an amazing short film that’s about 20-30 minutes long instead of being a feature length movie. The ending is where this movie was saved for some people, but I personally don’t see how, as nowhere in this movie do you see Camron Cade pushing to go into the direction that he does, and genuinely this script feels rushed.
Anyway, HIM is a movie that is not for me. If it’s for you, I’m happy you could enjoy it. I’m giving this movie a 1/5 as I feel like if this movie was a short film, we could’ve gotten a better and more focused project, as this movie is a mess.
