Superman is the latest movie from director James Gunn and is the first movie in the new DCU. The hype with this movie was huge, as many people (including myself) had this at the top of our anticipation lists for 2025. However, my excitement for this movie came from a mixture of really enjoying what James Gunn has done so far, and the curiosity of what a comic booky movie would look like in 2025. While we’ve seen comic book movies already, I mean comic booky in the old Christopher Reeves Superman and Adam West Batman way, with them being silly and fun.
The plot of Superman is, Lex Luthor wants superman dead and will do anything to have him be dead. While the plot is simple, this movie keeps your eyes glued to the screen just to see the epic fights. This movie focuses more on Superman more than Clark Kent and at the end of this movie, I’m fine with it.
Starting with the positives, the effects look great. This movie has many scenes where the effects need to look good for the scene to shine and they pull it off well in a time where rush CGI is very common. Next, I would love to complement the action in this movie. We have the signature James Gunn action scenes that work beautifully. One example is when Mr. Terrific is fighting soldiers and has a force field around Lois, where the camera changes POV’s with ease.
With the action being great, the choreography should be complemented as well, as the camera shots elevate it and makes it looks better. Another great thing about this movie is how charming the actors are on screen. David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult and Nathan Fillion are all great examples of this. Also, I really like how colorful this movie is. DC is known for being dark (in tone and color palate) but this movie has an amazing color palate that shines.
The only thing I’m mixed on is the dialogue, as there are moments where it gets bad, but the majority of the movie it’s normal movie dialogue where it’s not great, but also not bad. Overall, this movie was soooooo much fun to watch, and I recommend you see this in theaters. I’ll give this movie a 4.5/5 as it exceed my expectations and has become one of my favorites of the year.
