The Phoenician Scheme is the latest movie directed by Wes Anderson. If you don’t know about Wes Anderson, he is a director with a very distinct style, with most of his movies being very odd. I watched the trailer and enjoyed it, laughing at the odd humor Wes has in his films. As someone who has only seen Asteroid City out of Wes Anderson’s filmography, I was decently excited to see this. How did it turn out?
Any who, The Phoenician Scheme is a movie about a businessman, who has survived many assassination attempts, working on the biggest project of his life, but people against him add a gap to his plan and he has to fix it. The concept intrigued me, especially with the Wes Anderson style. As someone who didn’t like Asteroid City, would this movie be good?
Starting with the positives, this movie has top notch set design. Each set looks amazing and complements the cinematography really well. I also think the acting is phenomenal, whether it’s Tom Hanks, Michael Cera, Bryan Cranston or others, they tend to put on amazing performances. I was specifically shocked with Michael Cera, who I personally believe did the best job in his respective role, as it was nice to see him play something different than the normal Michael Cera role. I also enjoyed the change of color. Color when Zsa Zsa was alive and the black and white when he was in purgatory. I also really enjoyed the humor of this movie.
With the mixed, the one thing I’m mixed on is Wes Anderson’s style. While there are scenes that benefit from his style, there are enough that don’t. While I do think they can grow on me in the future, some scenes tend to drag on with his distinct style, that can get pretty bland or old quick. However, the scenes that benefit, tend to benefit heavily and make for an amazing movie.
Overall, Wes Anderson’s latest movie is an amazing comedy. The Phoenician Scheme is worth your time and is getting a 4/5. I recommend seeing this in theaters and supporting it, for original Hollywood ideas.
