Lilo and Stitch is the newest Disney live action remake, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. The original Lilo and Stitch is easily a top ten movie of all time for me, so yes, my expectations were high. But the question everyone was asking, is this another not needed Disney remake like Snow White and the seven controversies?
Anyway, Lilo and Stitch is about a young girl named Lilo who lost her parents and wishes upon a falling spaceship for a friend, she later gets that friend in the adorable and fluffy, Stitch. This has obviously been done before with the original, but is this version superior? In my personal opinion, it’s not even close.
Starting with the positives, this movie keeps Stitch as fun as ever and shows why he’s Disney’s modern cash cow. Maia Kealoha also does a great job as Lilo and has great chemistry with Sydney Agudong. Keeping up with the characters, I liked the addition of their neighbor, who wasn’t in the original and I liked the casting for Pleakley, in Billy Magnussen. I also think that the emotion of the original is done really well in this adaptation, and for budget reasons I thought it was smart that Pleakley and Jumba had a device that turned them into their voice actors.
With the mixed, while I liked how great Stitch looked, I personally thought Jumba looked goofy, the others looked fine, can’t complain. On the negatives, however, I really did not like Jumba in this movie, he was miss casted and you can really tell. I also didn’t like how they did his character as they made him the villain of the movie. I also thought Cobra Bubbles was done better in the original, as they made him the agent in this movie but had someone else play the caretaker, of which I didn’t like the caretaker in this movie. Also, David had a smaller role in this movie which is sad because I loved him as a character in the original.
Overall, Lilo and Stitch is a fun movie parents can take kids to see. While I think the original is better by a land slide, I do think a new generation of kids will love this as much as I love the original. I will give this movie a 2.5/5, as I didn’t really like the changes they made.
