***WARNING*** There is a rick roll in this movie.
Fear Street Prom Queen is the latest installment in the Fear Street franchise, directed by Matt Palmer. As someone who really enjoyed the trilogy from 2021, I was excited to see what they were going to do next with the franchise and sadly, I got my answer. I really think that Netflix should do quality checks from now on.
Anyway, this movie is about underdog, Lori Granger, running for prom queen with hard competition, until the prom queen candidates get killed one by one. The prom setting, while done before, has never been done well and with how great the trilogy was, I had faith and hoped this would be really good. However, the Fear Street franchise looks like it’s going to be like other horror franchises, where the quality peaks at the beginning and drops after.
With the positives, the movie is shot very well. The effects look great too, as the dead bodies and blood look real. I will also say the first half of the movie was a fun time. The characters were great, everything felt natural, the acting wasn’t bad, and the killers design looked pretty good compared to a lot of modern slashers.
However, with the negatives, the kills are generic and boring with none of them being exciting. Also, when you hit the halfway point in the movie, the fun is gone, and the movie turns into a generic slasher. It feels rushed as the pacing feels weird and the writing and acting get worse. The reveal of the killer(s) was very underwhelming, and their reasoning was pretty weak. The prom itself had me cringing. There was drama between the characters that was written poorly, and there was a dance fight which was hard to watch, as it was basically who can stay on their heels and not trip or fall.
Overall, this movie was disappointing and makes me lose faith in the Fear Street franchise. I will give this movie a 1.5/5 with hopes that the next movie is a lot better. Personally, I would say to skip this movie.
