Thunderbolts* is the newest project in the MCU, with this one being directed by Jake Schreier. While recently the MCU has felt like they had no idea where to go with their movies, (Except for Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3). I was hoping that Thunderbolts*, with all the hype and praise around it, would be a comeback for the MCU with the quality. So, the question is, as it’s been, “Will this movie save the MCU?”
Anyway Thunderbolts* is basically Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad, as a team of anti-heroes come together to beat a bigger threat. The biggest difference with this and The Suicide Squad is that this movie focuses on things like mental health and life purpose where The Suicide Squad is a movie filled with chaos and carnage.
To start with the positives, Sentry (Lewis Pullman) was a well-done villain and one of the best after the high evolutionary. I also thought the comedy of this movie flowed naturally throughout the movie and didn’t feel forced. Especially when Red Guardian (David Harbour) was on screen. The action was cool to watch as cars flipping and buildings exploding looked great and even the fights were well choreographed.
Now for the mixed, I have to say that they could’ve gone in depth for more of the characters and their stories, as Sentry and Yelena (Florence Pugh) were really the only ones they explored. While it’s nice we know more about them now, I would’ve liked to know more from Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) or Red Guardian. While the theme of this movie was mental health, I thought some of the ways they show you that is odd. Literally like two minutes after a fight someone would go on about mental health, and keep in mind the people they’re fighting would either a skyscraper above them or a four-minute walk away, and some of the dialogue used for it has made me cringe.
For the only negative, I don’t like how they beat Sentry. *SPOILERS* They quite literally beat Sentry (who is like a god) with a group hug. *SPOILERS OVER* While I am all for making people concerned about mental health and how to make theirs better, I don’t think for a superhero movie, that’s how you would beat a villain on the same level as a god.
But overall, Thunderbolts* was a fun movie. Did it save the MCU? Personally, I don’t think so unless Fantastic Four: First Steps does great too but, with quality I guess you can say so. I’d give this movie a 4/5 with hopes that Marvel keeps giving us more quality projects like this.
