Empty Bowls Contributes $2,800

photoThe seventh annual Empty Bowls fundraiser took place in the Fraser High School cafeteria on Thursday, January 30. Families who came to the dinner purchased a clay bowl created from sixth grade students and were served soup and rolls made from the Fraser Grill.

“Empty bowls takes place to raise money for MCREST, which is the Macomb county rotating emergency shelter team and help raise awareness of homelessness in our community,” Fraser art teacher Melissa Snyder said.

MCREST provides shelter form men, women, and children for up to 90 days in congregations across Macomb County. During the week of stay, congregations provide food, showers, transportation, and laundry services.

The Fraser Singers preformed during the meal for entertainment and a quilt sewn by the mother of Roger Drabant, FHS art teacher, was raffled off to help raise further proceeds.

Senior Danielle Mclean has worked the event the past two years. One idea of Empty Bowls is to show others how homeless people eat and how hungry some people are, Mclean said.

The dinner raised nearly $2,800 this year. All proceeds are given to MCREST to help continue provide care for local citizens.
