It’s Severely Contagious…Senioritis

Emily Herbert, Assistant Editor

Schools are full of germs and bacteria that can cause students and teachers alike to get sick. The common cold is most likely to be spread throughout schools across the country. There have been disease scares that school cautioned with hand sanitizer and coughing in elbows such as the Swine Flu and Ebola scares. Illness can be contagious, but there is a disease that is more contagious than the cold or flu. Seniors tend to catch it quite easily then it spreads amongst the underclassmen too. This contagion is called Senioritis and it is seen especially around this time of the year. It symptoms include fatigue, laziness, constant hunger, complaining, carelessness, zoning out, little to no effort in class, and sleeping–lots and lots of sleeping and naps. The only cure to senioritis is graduating high school after twelves years of school and going into the remission period of adulthood.
There are many seniors including here in Fraser that have caught senioritis. They have most definitely got it and it has spread even more as the end of the year is almost here.
“Senioritis is when seniors stopped caring about school,” said Amber Manning, who is a student at Henry Ford High School.
Amber’s opinion shows that Fraser is not the only high school who experiences senioritis, which as she said is when seniors become careless and not very motivated. Most if not all seniors can not wait until graduation, which what students hear at least once a day from the seniors they have classes with or pass in the halls. Motivation is at an all time low to do anything except eat, sleep, netflix, and repeat. Perhaps senioritis is a term used for an actual issue instead of being used as an excuse amongst seniors, but students have different opinions. For example some students at Fraser think senioritis is anxiety while others think it is just anticipation to leave school.
With all the seniors walking the halls with senioritis, it could make a person wonder if underclassmen could be getting a taste of it.
“…I’m ready to get school over with but I’m still respectful” stated junior, Haili Vollen when she was asked if she believed she has caught some senioritis from her upperclassmen.
Juniors have some stressful times during the school year that would make them wish they could graduate sooner such as all the tests like SATs and M-Steps. Having one more year left of high school can be considered a tease to the juniors who have caught onto the seniors anticipation to graduate.
“There’s not too much time left of high school so enjoy it while you can. Do you work and pass your classes because it’ll be over soon enough. We’ll miss it when it is finally over” advised Jessica Helfrich, a senior with senioritis but still a positive message for students who are not graduating this year.
Senioritis is real, but it is anticipation for the future like going away to college and spending more time with friends instead of homework. Of course the ugly truth is that senioritis can be used an excuse for why students do not want to do things like homework. It is the lack of motivation to do anything, and it is spreading fast especially towards the end of the year with summer just around the corner and college bound futures in the fall. A positive attitude like Jessica’s and a countdown until June 11th will help seniors overcome senioritis and its contagious spread.
