Lately, many of today’s artists write songs with the same themes include: love, heartbreak, depression, and inspiration that it becomes hard to find a song that everyone can really relate to. Well, a new pop star has arrived with the right kind of music. 18 year old Alessia Cara has began to shine to the world with her debut album Four Pink Wall.

Similar to how many artists became well-known, Alessia covered songs on YouTube since she was 13. She’s a fresh face for some people, but her career is already moving quickly. About a month before her debut album was released, she was performing her single “Here” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 29th who insisted she be placed on the program.

With her pure and powerful voice, her songs are not only melodious but soul-talking as well. Alessia’s well-known single “Here” is considered by MTV a song for everyone who secretly hates parties. She describes what some people would rather do and think when they’re at a party when she sings, “I would rather be at home all by myself not in this room with people who don’t even care about my well-being.” Well said. Not everyone enjoys going to a party.

People who are considered introverts or less social than others may consider this song their anthem. With her background music being the remix of Portishead’s “Glory Box,” people can enjoy its relaxing and soothing mood. Although, many would just question why you would go to a party if you don’t want to. You have a choice to go or not.

Another theme that you don’t see everyday is when artist focus on one year in their life, one age, and write about their experiences, their emotions, their thoughts. With Alessia’s song “Seventeen,” people can find it similar to Taylor Swift’s song “Fifteen.” Both songs discuss about what it is like to be a teenager. While “Fifteen” focuses on the experiences of a high school freshman, “Seventeen” is all about the high school seniors. In her lyrics, “I was too young to understand what it means, I couldn’t wait til I could be seventeen, I thought she lied when she said take your time to breathe, Now I wish I could freeze the time at seventeen.” Time is moving fast for the seniors and not many are ready to step out into the adult world. When we were young, what couldn’t we all wait to do? Grow up, and now that it’s hitting us how much time we have left of our youth.

Her songs included themes and meanings that people can instantly relate to and that’s hard to find when new artists continue to pop out of nowhere. Her music and voice, so passionate and eloquent, and it’s leading her to new places and new stages. A great artist to listen to!
