Following nearly two years of no new releases since his album Journals, Justin Bieber’s most recent single “What Do You Mean?” is at the top of the charts as of its release on August 28. Being the 23rd song in history to reach #1 on the week of its release, this new, catchy tune peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, debuted at #1 in over 20 countries and is already platinum in Australia and Sweden.

      Similar to and commonly compared to Skrillex & Diplo’s “Where Are Ü Now,” in which Bieber was featured, “What Do You Mean?” is a pop hit with a mix of electronic dance music, also known as EDM. Beginning with the steady beat of a clock ticking, as he says in the song, “What do you mean? / Said we’re running out of time,” and a piano playing single chords at a time, the beat later picks up and is accompanied by a resonant melody and what can be described as “tropical house” tunes, making it a bouncy tune that will catch people singing along.

      In the song, Bieber is misled by a girl who is constantly giving him mixed signals. The song begins: “What do you mean? / Ohh ohh ohh / When you nod your head yes / But you wanna say no / What do you mean? / Hey yeah / When you don’t want me to move / But you tell me to go.” Further into the song, he sings, “You’re so indecisive of what I’m saying / Trying to catch the beat, make up your heart / Don’t know if you’re happy or complaining / Don’t want for us to end / Where do I start.” Evidently, he wants to work through this, but because of her uncertainty, he is unclear on what she wants.

      Overall, the tuneful yet simple feeling that Bieber’s single gives off leaves people jamming out by themselves or with friends. After giving “What Do You Mean?” a listen, it is not hard to ‘make up your mind’ and notice how enjoyable his song is.
