“Not About Angels” Music Review

The song “Not About Angels” by artist Birdy offers its listeners a soft melody of lyrics that explain a story similar to the movie The Fault in Our Stars. In the first verse, it begins this tale with the artist asking herself if it is okay to indulge in a relationship when she knows that time will eventually separate them because she doesn’t want to have to give up her love filled heart.

This leads to the chorus that ensures us that angels will come and go, but then contradicts itself by repeatedly pleading not to be given up. This shows listeners that, although she knows that love may come again, she cherishes the time she has with her true love while it endures.

The second verse intensifies as the music grows a little louder and faster. Here, the artist breaks down into a somewhat anger that she has finally found real love, and yet life is unfairly preventing them from reaching it. However, she clings to this love because she cannot let it go after searching to long to find it.

“Not About Angels” concludes by restating the chorus and then revealing to listeners that she is not singing about angels, leaving them to dig deep inside themselves to find the most personal meaning. This open ending allows the audience to relate personally to the song and find a part of their identity within the way they interpret the lyrics.
