18 year old singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has stolen the hearts of almost everyone in the entertainment business.

In 2013, he starting gaining fans when by posting videos of himself covering songs with his guitar on the popular video app Vine. Since then, he released his debut album Handwritten and just recently, his second album Illuminate released, hitting the #1 spot on the Billboard 200.

Illuminate was released back in September, but with Shawn’s Illuminate World Tour just around the corner, many fans are still raging about the album.

The album is a collection of slow songs with important messages. Many of the songs are love ballads to the past women in his life, but occasionally a song dedicated to his father or a girl he is chasing after is thrown in the mix.

The second song on the album is called “Mercy.” It also has an acoustic version, which is the last song on the deluxe edition. The song explains that a girl has too much power over him with his unrequited love, and he wants her to let him go. The opening lines of the song start with, “You’ve got a hold of me/ Don’t even know your power/ I stand a hundred feet/ But I fall when I’m around you,” which explains how much he wants to get over her. The song tugs on the listener’s heart strings and makes them feel the pain he’s feeling over this love. The acoustic version intensifies this pain one hundred percent and can bring the listeners to tears.

The most popular song on the album is the hit single “Treat You Better.” The song was released 3 months before the album, and it became one of his most popular songs. The music video was released in July and shows an abusive relationship that Mendes wants to save the girl from. The song itself has Mendes pleading with a girl to love him instead of her boyfriend because he could be a better boyfriend. The chorus states, “I know I can treat you better/ Than he can/ Than any girl like you deserve a gentleman/ Tell me why are we wasting time/ On all your wasted crying/ When you should be with me instead/ I know i can treat you better/ Better than he can.” This song and the music video simultaneously captured the hearts of millions and made top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and landed number 42 on Billboard’s 100 Best Pop Songs of 2016.

Illuminate has become one of Mendes’ most popular album, with the popularity still sky-rocketing. Mendes’ singer-songwriting ability makes his music similar to that of many popular artists. Music fans that enjoy Troye Sivan, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran will adore Illuminate.
